How to Stitch Spooky Earrings

This week, my sewing time has been dedicated to crafting seasonal treats. I have been invited to a couple of Halloween-themed events this year. One of them is a costume party, and I will be wearing the thrifty witch costume I created for the Sew Daily Halloween Thrift Store Challenge. The other is a casual dinner, and I think I need to stitch some spooky earrings because I’m not going to wear my witch costume to that event.

An elaborate costume isn’t mandatory at this laid-back dinner, but Halloween style remains non-negotiable. This is where the magic of statement earrings comes in! Treating myself, I’ve chosen our Creepy Cute FSL Charms — the perfect trick to infuse an aura of whimsy into my outfit.

Y’all know I love bold earrings, so I’ve opted to amplify the glam by doubling up designs on each ear, ensuring maximum impact for my stitch time. Embracing the beauty of asymmetry, I’m fashioning earrings that dance to their own tune, not mirror images but harmoniously in sync, adding an unconventional twist to my ensemble. Come along with me as I stitch spooky earrings!

How to Make the Earrings

1

Download the designs and load them onto your embroidery machine.

2

Stitch out each design you want to use. I will be making one earring with a hat and bat, and the other one will be a spiderweb and a cat. (Ha, that rhymes!)

3

Trim the threads, remove the designs from the hoop, and cut them out.

Step 3. Cutting the designs apart after trimming and removing them from the hoop.

4

I stitched the designs on water-soluble stabilizer. Remove the stabilizer following the manufacturer’s instructions. (You can find more info about stitching these designs in the Fall 2019 issue of Creative Machine Embroidery magazine.)

Step 4. Removing the stabilizer.

Remove only enough stabilizer as needed to open the lace. The stabilizer remaining in the threads will act as a starch, stiffening the charms and supporting the lace. If too much stabilizer is washed out of the lace, the motifs can be starched to stiffen them.

5

Finish the earrings with coordinated jewelry findings. You’ll need six jump rings, two large brass hoops, and earposts. I got creative and used stuff I had in my stash.

Now, no matter what I decide to wear to the dinner event, I can add a little Halloween spirit to my look.

Stitching for Fall

I revel in the art of sewing and crafting this time of year, and I love to be accompanied by the comforting embrace of a steaming cup of tea or a frothy latte in my studio. As I stitch and sip, my thoughts drift to our new Fall Embroidery Design Collection, which debuted in the Fall 2023 issue of CME.

Check out our stitch-out video highlighting the latte design Autumn Leaves, Latte Please!

Imagine a festive truck adorned with pumpkins coexists with the aroma of a freshly baked pie, where the gentle glow of a fall floral candle mingles with the sweetness of a hot cup of tea or a to-go latte. This fall collection, a testament to the essence of autumn, embodies the spirit of the season.

I think these designs would make exquisite napkins, charming aprons, and even a pie carrier. Each design can transform ordinary projects into extraordinary gifts fit for a holiday host. How cute would one of the fall designs be on the bottom edge of a kitchen scarf? I’m putting that on my “to stitch” list!

With these designs, the art of gifting becomes a tapestry of warmth and delight, weaving a tale of gratitude and sophistication. What’s on your embroidery machine to-stitch list this season? We hope you stitch spooky earrings or something to celebrate fall!

Let us know — we love to see your creative ideas.

Happy stitching!

Sadie
